José Peseiro wants “responsibility” as “nothing is impossible” in footbal

Coach wants a team “playing good football” against Gil Vicente, to assure the return to Estádio do Jamor, five years later

FC Porto will start the second leg of the semi-final of the Portuguese Cup with a comfortable lead of 3-0, but José Peseiro reminded, in press conference, that the team will still have the “responsibility” of “playing good football” and winning. The coach added that Helton, as usual in this competition, will be the goalkeeper, but refused the idea of having a “secondary” team playing this Wednesday (21h00), at Estádio do Dragão. Especially considering the term doesn’t apply: the squad isn’t that vast in terms of “quantity” and several players that have been sent in “in the last week and a half” will have to play.

“Like I said in the press conference before the first leg, FC Porto hasn’t been to the final of the Portuguese Cup since 2011 and we want to do that. We are winning 3-0, but we have the responsibility of playing the best we can and reaching for the best possible score. The first leg gave us tranquillity, but that’s all. There needs to be responsibility, commitment, determination, and will to do the best”, the coach stated, at the press conference of the Centro de Treinos e Formação Desportiva PortoGaia, in Olival. Peseiro explained that the team needs to “confirm” the presence in the final, especially because “nothing is impossible” in football: “What we told the players in the speech, video and preparation for the training this morning is that tomorrow brings an important match for our goals. We are halfway through, in good position, but that’s not enough”.

José Peseiro revealed the team “is chosen” already and that he will include the players that make better use of the tactic set, but “there can’t be complacency”. “My confidence in every player is complete, that’s why we rotated the team against the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Moreirense, and Belenenses. Regardless of who plays, I believe they will show potential and responsibility. Otherwise, they would not be playing for FC Porto.

On the same note, the coach denied that some players will be spared due to fatigue: “Most professional players play under pain and continuous treatment. That’s normal in professional football. They aren’t always comfortable, like we are, and, apart from that, FC Porto always needs to win. You have to be strong to overcome that, and we also have an excellent medical staff to help the players recover”. When asked about having more time to train now, considering this is likely the last match in the middle of the week for FC Porto, in 2015/16, Peseiro replied he rather have more matches, as it would mean the Dragons were still playing in European competitions.
